Directions to Wat Sriboonruang from Chiang Mai by bus

Go to Chiang Mai Bus Terminal 1 (Chiang Phueak Bus Terminal). The bus terminal is around 1 kilometre from Chang Puak Gate, on the north side of the city.

A taxi booked using the GrabTaxi app will be the most efficient way to get to the bus station.

We generally recommend arriving at least 30 minutes before the bus or van’s scheduled departure time. Services may depart slightly earlier or later than scheduled.

From the bus terminal, there are two ways to get to Wat Sriboonruang – the orange bus or VIP van.

Both services are operated by Yanyorn Nakorn Chiang Mai. You can access the orange bus and VIP van timetables here.

Orange bus

The orange bus departs from Chiang Mai to Fang every 30 minutes from early in the morning until the evening. The bus is fan-cooled, not air-conditioned.
Tickets cost 80 Baht each way. You can only book a one-way ticket from Chiang Mai. To book a return ticket, you will need to flag down the bus outside Wat Sriboonruang on your return to Chiang Mai, and pay on board.
Allow 3 to 4 hours for your journey.

VIP van

The VIP vans depart from Chiang Mai to Fang every hour from 7am to 5pm. The van is air-conditioned.

Tickets are 150 Baht each way. You must pre-book a ticket at the ticket office (map). You can access the ticket office by walking behind the buses at the bus station until you see some white vans on your left. Walk past the white vans through the small shops and you will see the ticket office on the other side of the road.

We can pre-book a return ticket on the VIP van once you have arrived at Wat Sriboonruang. Usually this is done at least 2 days in advance.

Allow 2.5 to 3 hours for your journey.

Other ways to get to Wat Sriboonruang

You may also consider a private taxi or riding a motorcycle to Fang. A private taxi will be more expensive, but there are many car hire services in Chiang Mai. A private taxi should cost around 2,000 baht flat rate without using the meter – you should negotiate this with the driver in advance.

If you are unfamiliar with riding a motorcycle in Thailand, we do not encourage you to ride to Fang. The road has many bends and the traffic can be dangerous.

When you get to Wat Sriboonruang

Please let us know in advance your anticipated arrival time if possible so that we can welcome you on your arrival. You can do this once you have booked your ticket.

Please arrive no later than 4pm – our local staff will not be able to welcome you after this time. If you know in advance that you will arrive after 4pm, we encourage you to book a night at the affordable TonFang Hotel, a short walk up the road from Wat Sriboonruang, and come to the Wat after 8am the next morning. On arrival, one of our staff will greet you. You will meet the abbot of the temple, Dr. Apisit. We are also required by law to take a copy of your passport. If you already have a copy, we may be able to accept this, but please bring your original passport for verification.

Our staff will then drive you the short distance to the meditation centre. There, you will be shown your kuti and the facilities.
