The temple is located on an area of land that is 15 rai, 3 gnan, and 25 square wa, recorded on Deed No. 6962 volume 70 page 26, located at Sansai, Fang, Chiang Mai, Thailand, 50110.
Wat Sriboonruang was a deserted temple that is presumed to have been created between B.E. 2100-2120. This temple is a medium size temple located in the middle of a community called Ban Longgniwtaow because it is centrally located in the village where there are streams from a branch of the Fang river called Namlong. Wat Sriboonruang is a medium size temple but it has received a lot of attention from the people. Evidence found at the base of an old Buddha statue that was excavated by the villagers suggest that the king of Fang in that era attended activities on important Buddhist days with monks and villagers. At one time the king and his family dedicated a Buddha statue to this temple. At that time the temple was named Wat Sriboonruang but an inscription found on an old Buddha statue indicates that the temple was named Wat Prakaew. In a time around B.E. 2175 Fang city was taken over by the Burengnong king and attention was not paid to the temple because of cultural differences between the local Lanna and Burmese cultures this lead to the gradual desertion of the temple.
In B.E. 2467 a monk named Phra Nanta Nantatharo was walking from Bansongquare Jomtong to Fang city to practice meditation. While he was in Fang, he noticed an abundance of vacant land, when he returned to Jomthong he told his parents about the land and they moved to Fang.
There were many people that talked about this area being haunted and many ghosts had been seen. This made the people afraid and they moved to Banhouyngoo. Later the people moved back to this place because it was discovered to be a wonderful place for agriculture with a good climate and rich soil. There was a community meeting held at a later date and a resolution was made to build a temple at the site. While excavating the site there were many Buddha statues found. The intact Buddha statues were saved for use in the temple and the partial Buddha statues were give to the local people to keep and worship in their homes. An inscription on a Buddha statue indicates that the temple is between 480 to 500 years old.
Wat Sriboonruang was developed by a group of local people lead by the following: Mr. Pore Pokkam, Mr. Inta Kaewkammoon, Mr. Sook Inkaew, Mr. Panya Kawichai and Mr. Kaew Chailangka. At that time Phra Nanta Nantatharo was the Abbot but the temple was named by the Abbot of Wat Sriboonruang Maehang, that name was Wat Sriboonruang. The temple was conferred Wisoonkamasima on 2 May, B.E. 2475. Since that time Wat Sriboonruang has always been developed by order of the Abbot and the temple Board of Directors.
The Abbots of Wat Sriboonruang since B.E. 2467 are as follows:

Construction of Wat Sriboonruang started on 15 April, B.E. 2468, Wansonkranti, The 8th day of the 7th waning moon, The Year of the Cow. The villagers asked for opinions on naming the village “Bansonquare” as this was the in keeping with the old village they had moved from. Today Bansongquare has been divided into 3 villages:
